Blitz Chess #492: Anti-Time Trouble Practice

Playing a four-game session of 3+0 where my goal was to spend no more than 4-5 seconds per move. This is a worthwhile experiment if you’re looking to work on your time management!

Opponent include GM Slavko Cicak, GM Pablo Zarnicki, GM Frode Urkedal, and Gomez.

  1. Awesome video as always, John. Any reason why you abandoned the Sicilian Kan? I only see you play 2… d6 nowadays.

  2. Nice specialised training recently, you deserve to do well with such dedication.

  3. Does John have 1 GM norm?

  4. When someone asked me who is your coach i say john. And they seem to be shocked . #teamscandi

  5. Pulled out of my gf when I saw John uploaded.

  6. How would you have responded if HeltMatt had played Qb4, as you mentioned?

  7. Some people believe in letting their babies listen to Mozart, Chopin, Beethoven, etc. My toddler was brought up on John Bartholomew videos and he's a genius now.

  8. your humble john u can be a gm no problem just trust yourself

  9. Great video! I love it when you win ๐Ÿ™‚

  10. Maybey you can also play on Lichess and try to berserk every game in the tournament ?

  11. Anyone miss the old John, who used to trade queens nevertheless?

  12. On that Rg4 move in your third game against HeltMatt, what's stopping Black from simply exchanging Rooks?

  13. Trust your first instincts or else you risk analysis paralysis.

  14. Couldn't stop laughing after Nf3 Nc3 Ne1 Nd1 Nc3 Nf3

  15. sometimes when you play faster you play better moves!

  16. You're too strong man! Beating GMs left and right! ๐Ÿ™‚

  17. I enjoyed our match, John. Looking forward to the next one ๐Ÿ™‚

  18. First move of the video: 6 seconds failed ๐Ÿ˜‰

  19. John, seems like you've been watching Hikaru's videos! I can see semblance with how he assesses positions, speed of moves, etc! Not a bad role model

  20. Wow, excellent play here, John. Impressive.

  21. Very impressive, John! You played fantastic AND fast chess in all these games.

  22. I actually think slowing down to think in the last game is what messed you up. Took you out of rhythm. You actually use a different part of your brain to make rapid decisions vs thinking about things.

  23. I'd like most of my moves to be in the 0 to 5 seconds range… makes first move after 6 seconds^^

  24. At 5:46:
    Ra8+.. Kg7
Ne6+ winning the rook and destroying the pawn structure, or are the knights causing too much trouble?

  25. Does anyone else think John looks like a character from that show supernatural. Castele or something like that

  26. John. You mentioned in your podcast with the Perpetual Chess podcast that you had a friend-GM that had a more aggresive style that seemed to have helped him get the gm-norm. Perhaps you could also try to do some blitz sessions with such style, and see how it goes. At least it would be very interesting for yours truly ๐Ÿ˜€

  27. Brilliant! now, to extrapolate this to OTBs… Work the problem; failure is not an option. Well done! Good exercise!

  28. John, (you may not know) on the tactics trainer you can select a very wide rating range in unrated mode, for example 400-2600. I think it can be a very valuable exercise to go through a chunk of puzzles without knowing how hard they are going to be. It is also very refreshing, and your viewers might just love it ๐Ÿ˜‰

  29. I'm a beginner what good videos you have for beginners?

  30. You and Jerry are the best chess you tubers you both explain your thoughts excellently and make chess fun. You both kick ass as well haha

  31. Sorry to tell you but your membership to teamscandi has been revoked maybe try joining teamsicilian

  32. This is probably key to get more wins in classical time control. I like this 'putting-pressure' John very much. "I'm gonna KILL his counterplay" Ye man!

  33. Could you play more standard games please.. i love them

  34. Hey there John. I have taken so much from your videos. I'm a huge fan of getting acquainted with "irregular openings" and love Basman's st george defense. Would you be interested in doing a video on that opening and your advice? Thank you for all the videos. I am swinging between 1000 and high 1100s. Up from an abysmal 700 months ago after watching your videos

  35. Fins u are a real awesome player man

  36. Been watching a ton of these lately but it won't let me like the vids, because i already did, years ago.
